Whitney Buckel, PharmD

Whitney Buckel, PharmD is the System Antimicrobial Stewardship Program Manager and an Associate Professor at Intermountain Health. Dr. Buckel has a strong background in Infectious Diseases, with specific training and expertise in antimicrobial stewardship. She began her career as a Clinical Infectious Disease Pharmacist at Intermountain Medical Center, where she established an Antimicrobial Stewardship Program, as well as a role for Infectious Diseases Pharmacy within the Infectious Diseases Consultation Service.

Dr. Buckel’s initial research focused on the appropriate treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections. While that work has continued, she has expanded her research to include interventions aimed to reduce the risk of resistant organisms, including Clostridioides difficile. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she was actively involved in developing and disseminating therapeutic guidance to clinicians. Dr. Buckel’s most recent and enduring research focuses on antimicrobial stewardship in unique settings, including small and rural community hospitals, the outpatient setting, and within health system and network stewardship.

Dr. Buckel enjoys giving back to the community through professional organization involvement, such as serving as the Antimicrobial Stewardship Track Chair for The Society of Healthcare Epidemiology of America Spring Meeting, Vice Chair on the Board of Pharmacy Specialty Council on Infectious Diseases, and Board Member at Large for the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists.

In her free time, Dr. Buckel enjoys hiking, climbing, skiing, traveling, and spending time with her family.
