Dr. Stephen K. Aoki, Professor and Chief of Sports Medicine, specializes in the surgical treatment of pediatric, adolescent, and adult sports injuries, primarily of the hip and knee. Dr. Aoki serves as team physician for University of Utah Gymnastics and University of Utah Football. He is the former Head Orthopaedic Team Physician for Real Salt Lake Major League Soccer. Dr. Aoki received his undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degree at Harvard University. He completed his medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City and subsequently completed his orthopaedic surgery residency and sports medicine fellowship at the University of Utah. Dr. Aoki practices both at the University Orthopaedic Center and Primary Children´s Hospital.
Dr. Aoki's hip practice focuses on joint preservation and hip arthroscopy. His surgical expertise includes the treatment of femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), labral tears, cartilage injuries, hip instability due to capsular insufficiency, and ischiofemoral impingement. He has done extensive research in the field of hip arthroscopy including technical articles focused on improving the surgical treatment of FAI and hip stability.
Dr. Aoki's knee practice focuses on both pediatric and adult injuries. His surgical expertise addresses ACL tears, patellar dislocations, ligament/tendon/cartilage injuries, meniscus tears, osteochondritis dissecans (OCD lesions), tibial spine fractures, and congenital discoid meniscus. He has a particular surgical interest in pediatric athletic injuries complicated by open growth plates.
