What is an Annual Wellness Visit?
After you join Medicare, Annual Wellness Visits help you and your provider get an accurate picture of your health, at no cost to you. That’s especially important as you get older, because these visits help catch and track potential health issues early, so you can enjoy the best possible quality of life.
Annual Wellness Visits are a little different from a traditional physical exam, in that the purpose is to get a complete picture of your health. Before your visit, you’ll fill out a Health Risk Assessment, which helps you and your care team develop a personalized plan to prevent health problems to keep you healthy.
The visit includes:
- Screenings for mental and behavioral health, risk of falling and other possible health issues
- Blood pressure, height and weight check
- Recommendations for preventative services and lifestyle changes
- Creating or revising a plan for end-of-life care
- Certain covered screenings and vaccinations
If you’re new to Medicare, you are also entitled to a free Welcome to Medicare Visit that includes additional services such as:
- A simple vision test
- A written plan letting you know other preventive services you need, as well as referrals for care if needed
- A routine EKG screening
What’s not covered?
Medicare Annual Wellness Visits do not cover new or chronic health problems you may want to address with your doctor. If you want to discuss problems outside the scope of these visits, a separate charge will apply - basically what you would pay if the additional care took place at a separate office visit.
Two for the price of one?
Because Annual Wellness Visits are limited in scope, it may make sense to combine an annual wellness with an office visit to address other health concerns such as medication refills, referrals to specialists and so on. Ask your provider or scheduler if it’s possible to schedule an annual wellness visit in addition to your next office visit.
