Matthew Cummings, NP

Matthew "Matt" Cummings, MSN, NNP-BC, is a neonatal nurse practitioner at Intermountain Health's Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. He is especially drawn to caring for critically ill newborns with complex congenital conditions, surgical needs, and challenging respiratory disease. These patients bring together the physiology, critical thinking, teamwork, and attention to detail he loves about neonatal medicine. He also values the opportunity to support families through difficult and uncertain moments, help them understand their baby's condition and care, and celebrate each step of progress with them. His clinical interests include the care of critically ill and medically complex newborns, congenital anomalies and surgical conditions, advanced respiratory support, neonatal physiology, and family-centered care.

Matt brings several years of bedside NICU nursing experience to his role, and he understands how important the small details can be when caring for a critically ill newborn. He values clear, honest communication, takes the time to explain the "why" behind a baby's care, and makes sure parents are heard and included in decisions. As the father of a NICU graduate himself, he approaches each infant with compassion, careful attention, and the same advocacy he would want for his own family.

Matt believes the best neonatal care begins by putting the child first in every decision and combines clinical excellence with compassion, communication, and partnership with families. Every baby deserves safe, thoughtful, evidence-based care tailored to their unique needs, and every family deserves to be heard, informed, respected, and included as an important part of their child's care team.

Matt grew up in the small town of Kamas, Utah, and now lives in Davis County with his family. He has also lived in several places around the country and overseas, which gave him an appreciation for different communities and perspectives. He served in the United States Marine Corps, discharging at the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his wife and their six children, whether at sports and school events or on a hike — especially one that ends at a waterfall. He also enjoys playing the guitar.
